If you're paid every other week, most months bring two paychecks, but a couple of months bring three. Knowing which months those are in 2027 lets you plan that extra money now instead of watching it vanish. Here's the full list for every biweekly schedule, plus how to tell which one is yours.
Why 3-paycheck months happen
Biweekly pay comes every 14 days, so a year has 26 paydays (and occasionally 27). Twelve months × two paychecks is only 24, so the extra paydays land in whichever months have room for three: a month with 29 or more days whose first payday falls early enough. Which months those are depends only on the date of your first payday in January.
2027 three-paycheck months for Friday paydays
Most biweekly employers pay on Fridays, and there are only two possible Friday schedules:
| First payday in 2027 | 3-paycheck months | Total |
|---|---|---|
| Friday, Jan 1, 2027 | January, July, December | 27 paychecks in 2027 (see note) |
| Friday, Jan 8, 2027 | April, October | 26 paychecks |
How to tell which schedule you're on: look at your last paycheck of 2026 or count forward from any recent payday in steps of 14 days. If you're paid on Friday, October 23, 2026, your schedule continues to Friday, January 1, 2027. If you're paid on Friday, October 30, 2026, it continues to Friday, January 8, 2027.
Note on the January 1 schedule: January 1, 2027 is New Year's Day, a bank holiday. Many employers pay early, on Thursday, December 31, 2026. If yours does, that check counts toward December 2026, and in 2027 you'd have 26 paychecks with three-paycheck months in July and December. Check your employer's 2027 payroll calendar to be sure.

Paid weekly? Your 5-paycheck months
Weekly pay gives 52 paychecks in 2027, and some months have five paydays instead of four. For a Friday payday, the five-Friday months in 2027 are January, April, July, October and December. (2027 starts and ends on a Friday, so it has 53 Fridays: if you're paid on Fridays and New Year's Day pay isn't moved, you could see 53 paychecks.)
What to do with the third paycheck
If your regular budget runs on two paychecks a month (the safest way to budget biweekly pay), the third check isn't needed for bills. Pick its job before it arrives:
- Emergency fund: two extra checks a year can build a starter cushion quickly.
- Debt payoff: send it to your smallest balance (snowball) or highest interest rate (avalanche).
- Annual bills: car registration, insurance premiums, memberships.
- Sinking funds: holidays, birthdays, travel, car repairs.
- Get ahead: pay next month's rent early so the following months feel lighter.
A simple rule some people use is to split it, for example half to debt or savings and half to a fun or "catch-up" category, so the plan feels sustainable.
Watch out for two things
- Bills that come out per paycheck. If insurance or a retirement contribution is deducted from every check, the third check will be smaller than you think. Use the net amount.
- Weekend and holiday paydays. If a payday falls on a holiday and your employer pays the day before, a check can slip into the previous month and change which month gets three.
